Thermal overload relay is an important electrical protection component, mainly used to protect motor or other electrical equipment from overload damage. Its role is to detect overload, automatically cut off the power supply, to prevent the equipment from overheating and damage. Working principle is to use the Joule’s laws, through the deformation of the bimetal to push the link action, and then disconnect the control circuit, to achieve the protection of equipment.

The role of thermal overload relay

The main function of thermal overload relays is to protect the motor from overload damage. This will lead to motor temperature rise, long-term overload operation will lead to motor life shortened or even burned. The thermal overload relay can be detected when the motor overload, quickly cut off the power supply, to protect the motor from damage.

Working principle of thermal overload relay

Thermal overload relays use Joule’s laws to detect motor movement. Specifically, heat is generated when an electric current flows through the bimetallic plate. When the current exceeds a certain value, the heat will make the bimetallic plate deformation. When the deformation to a certain distance, will push the connecting rod action, cut off the control circuit, so that the contactor lost power, the main circuit cut off, thus realizing the overload protection of the motor.

In conclusion, the thermal overload relay can effectively protect the electrical equipment such as motor by monitoring the change of current and using the bimetal physical characteristics to cut off the power in time.
